In February East Glos Club raised £1190 by means of a raffle, for victims of the Asian Tsunami. The next decision was how to use the money to best effect.
The Club was then contacted by one of its members Wendy Stubbs. Her close friend Henry Warren and his family were caught up in the Tsunami whilst staying in Ranna on the southern tip of Sri Lanka. His daughter Ana Louisa’s life had been saved by the quick thinking of Ramani, wife of the family they were staying with. Ramani and husband Shantha had lost everything. However, this loss did not stop them helping Henry and others to safety and ensuring that everyone got to hospital and were subsequently cared for. They had nothing but they still kept on giving over the next few days.
Henry Warren and others appreciated that they had an enormous debt of gratitude to these amazing people and he, together with Wendy Stubbs and numerous friends around the world committed themselves to raising money to put the life of this family back together again. As a result of this situation East Glos decided the most appropriate use of the money raised would be to help Shantha and Ramani rebuild their lives and their business. This would enable members to have a continuing direct link with a community affected by the Tsunami.
The club has launched a special web site www.eastglos.co.uk/members/tsunami to keep members and other interested parties up to date with the rebuilding project. The latest pictures and reports from Sri Lanka are now featured on the site.
