Cirencester open junior tournament

The tournament, with a record entry of 140, was completed on time in spite of two of the four days being interrupted by thunderstorms. The referees, Dudley Georgeson and Penny Allberry, greatly appreciated the players’ willingness to complete some of their matches in difficult conditions.

Of the sixteen finalists, eight came from the home club. Georgina Jefferies excelled by winning both the Under 14 and Under 16 singles. The much improved Georgina defeated the same plucky opponent, Sarah Thomas from Whiteshill, Stroud in both finals which were of very good playing standard. In the younger age groups Cirencester players Emily Thomas, Adas Bamforth, Tom Groombridge, Joely Bennett and Piers Dickinson showed promise by winning or being runner-up in the Under 10 and Under 12 events. Matthew Griffiths won earlier very good matches against Patrick White of Cirencester and Ben Fryer of Cheltenham and then reached the final of the Under 16 singles. He was outpowered by the very promising Mark Mackintosh from Minchinhampton L.T.C. but as Matthew is still under 14 y.o. his performance bodes well for his future.

The sportsmanship on court was excellent throughout the tournament, with one exception which was dealt with promptly by the referee. Cirencester Tennis Club proved yet again that juniors as well as adults are encouraged to play at the club and the organisers appreciate that very nearly all of the over 200 adult members are pleased that juniors are given many opportunities to play, compete and be coached. Adults and students, too numerous to list, provide much appreciated help for Penny and Dudley who organise this tournament, the junior weekly club session and other events for juniors and adults.

Henman eyes ultimate prize

Tim Henman is in Athens ready to compete in the Olympic games. This will be the third time round for Tim who is hoping to improve on the silver medal he won as part of the men’s doubles back in 1996 in Atlanta. Tim will begin his challenge when he plays against Jiri Nocak of the Czech Republic on Sunday evening.
We wish him well.
