Mini Tennis Information:
What is Mini Tennis?
Mini Tennis is exactly what the name suggests - the game of tennis modified for younger inexperienced players, in which the skills and tactics of the real game can be learnt and used.
This goes in accordance with other sports such as football, rugby and cricket where scaled down versions of the games have been developed to give younger players more chance of success and encourage them to stay involved in the games.
Mini Tennis has three distinct colour coded stages in the sequence of traffic lights; Red, Orange and Green. Starting with Red, the children play on small courts with rackets and sponge balls. As, they progress, the size of court, racket length and speed of ball, height of bounce, and length of match all increase until they reach the full size game.
Where Can I Play?
The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) is working in partnership with progressive tennis clubs who will offer quality assured all year round Mini Tennis Programmes.
- A typical all year round Mini Tennis Programme will feature:
- An innovative range of activities led by an LTA Licensed Coach.
- Coaching sessions in 3 school terms to allow players to progress through mini tennis red, orange and green stages as they improve.
- Holiday courses which allow the opportunity of further coaching and competition.
- Regular competitive opportunities, both within the Club and against other Clubs.
- Tournaments based at the Club for mini tennis players from across the County to enter.
- Links with local primary schools.
- The provision of 'sports hall type' indoor facilities or indoor courts for use during the winter.
Gloucestershire delivers Mini Tennis through two ways - County Mini Tennis Centres and County Mini Tennis Events.
County Mini Tennis Venues offer permanent opportunities for children to progress through the game at a level correct for their skills.
County Mini Tennis Events will be held once as month at Oxstalls Indoor Tennis Centre and will be aimed at encouraging more people to play Mini Tennis as well giving players that already play the chance of playing some competitive matches and competitions.
